I need to reiterate that I have 4.1.2 working on one Win 7 Pro x64 system. One comment that Wireshark doesn't need npf if running as admin has to be pure BS. Npf is the WinPCAP driver!! So, the focus here needs to be in getting the WinPCAP driver installed and running in a system that seems to not want to do that. I used no special tricks on the first system.
I'm using the same internet security. Again with no tricks. What I don't understand is how to get the driver / service to run on the 2nd system. What is this 'other' pleaseI have another where the npf driver isn't running and nothing I've tried seems to help.
Capture WiFi network traffic using Wireshark with any wireless network card on Windows Vista. All in all, after installing Acrylic WiFi, launch Wireshark with Administrator privileges (by right clicking. I also check the msvcp and msvcr dlls in SysWOW64 and deleted it, without success.
The 'other' is Windows 7 x64 also. Thus the comparison. I'm sorry if that wasn't clear. I have no problem with Wireshark as nearly as I can determine. I've been using it for years on multiple Windows platforms. The problem I'm having is getting WinPCAP / npf running on one Win 7 64 system.
Again, in contrast to another (i.e. Also Win 7 64) where it works fine with no troubles. And, to add, it seems like I did have it running on the problem system in a somewhat earlier version. So, I'm trying to solve this installation/instantiation issue. Merete: Now I feel like we're getting somewhere. It appears that none of my Windows 7 Pro systems can find msinfo64'!!??? Each of these systems was built at a different time / place so it seems universal.
Yet, each one reports in Computer / System Properties that it.is. a 64-bit Operating System. In the systems where it works, running msinfo32 does show the driver being present in the indicated place. I'm trying the latest Wireshark 1.6.5 now. It worked on one of my Win 7 Pro 64 systems just now. Trying it on the 'problem' machine.
It reports 'WinPCAP is already installed on this machine' Press OK to force. I got the same error during install as before which is: 'can't write C: Windows system32 Packet.dll'.
Could be in the services fmarshall maybe the service is running. To use a quote from FAQ How can I see if WinPcap is installed on my system? How can I remove it? A: WinPcap 2.1 or newer. Winpcap was in the (x86) folder. Uninstalled Wireshark. Revo Uninstaller Pro doesn't see it.
I'm not sure what you mean by 'uninstall hardware' it's not in the device manager list. Nothing in the c: windows temp folder of interest I don't know how to instantiate such a script. Tried to install WinPCAP again w/o Wireshark. The sorts of things that come up: WinPcap 4.1.2 is already installed on this machine. Press OK if you want to force the installation or Cancel.
Error opening file for writing: C: Windows system32 Packet.dll Click Abort to stop the installation. So, that's where I'm stuck because this behavior is consistent. It doesn't seem to matter if antivirus is off and it doesn't seem to matter if I run the install.exe as Administrator. Or both of course. So, I conclude that I want to get past this message that WinPcap is already installed.
For starters at least. Hi, I'm determined to get to the bottom of this, we should have found it by now so it begs some more details. Did you install the 32bit version and the 64 bit version It's normal that WinPcap leaves files in Program files (x86).
The installer is still 32bit, but the driver is 64bit and the user level DLLs (packet.dll and wpcap.dll) are both 32 and 64bit ( install two copies of them). Wireshark should work just fine.

Is this your account on this computer? Only one account?
NOTE: starting with WinPcap 4.1, by default WinPcap starts when the system boot. Look in the start-up group go to start orb run type in msconfig. Thanks for the help. I finally got it.
I really don't like to rebuild Windows on this workstation because there's so much installed and configured. It takes a lot of work to get it all back so it will be a network management computer with all the tools, etc. In anticipation of doing just that, I decided to go for broke and ran ComboFix. It got rid of: c: windows SysWOW64 Packet.dll c: windows SysWOW64 winpca p.dll I guess I hadn't looked there or they were hidden from searches. With these gone, WinPcap no longer complained that it was already installed and it installed perfectly!
Thanks again.
